Feghali provides rich information on plants from Ca’aan while anchoring them in their cultural and historical context. <image:title>Journal - Happy Year of the Yang Wood Dragon! - By Nicole Acosta Nemergut</image:title>
<image:caption>My favorite seed catalog came last week. It seems silly to think about planting seeds when the temperature barely reached out of the 30s and snow is coming this week, but this is exactly what we mean when we think of the new year as the start of spring. Spring doesn’t start when we first see robins or crocuses emerge, Spring starts when we begin planning and visioning. It starts when it’s still cold and we’re flipping through the seed catalog. Most of us are familiar with the 12 animals of the zodiac, but the 12 animals exist alongside a rotation of the five elements and alternating yin and yang years. The Dragon represents good fortune, power, and wisdom. East Asian dragons are benevolent creatures that bring blessings and change. This energy alongside the element of Wood creates a space for expansive growth and transformation. Wood is the element of the Liver and the spring. It’s quick and flexible. It can also feel urgent and impatient. Yang is dynamic action and movement, compared to Yin, that is material and substantive. A Yang Wood Dragon year beginning during the wood time of year can create a lot of energy, sometimes without a clear outlet. I’ve felt this restlessness and fitfulness too. Everything grates my nerves, and I can’t find the best place to direct my energy. This is the energy of seeds on the verge of transformation. They need to build resources and rally to break through their shells and up through the surface of the soil. Wood qi moves up and out. How can we use our seed energy this year for abundance, growth, and transformation? How can we channel that restlessness and fitfulness into liberation?</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Pediatric Acupuncture and Bodywork: FAQ - By Kenna Bouvet</image:title>
<image:caption>What does a treatment for kids look like? Pediatric appointments look and run a bit differently than a typical adult appointment. Treatments are shorter and very interactive (especially for infants and toddlers). We suggest the child bring a toy or stuffed animal that they love. This makes the appointment fun and playful and creates a space where children feel comfortable and relaxed. Before the visit a parent fills out an intake form (teens can fill out their own), and if I have any questions or want to know more before the appointment, I correspond through email or phone with the parent. There is a short intake in person while the child gets comfortable playing or for infants while they sleep or feed. For older children and teens this conversation includes them, and I love to hear in their own words how things are going. Then I explain what modalities we will use, begin some diagnostic techniques, and get started with the treatment. Often, we keep playing and chatting throughout the treatment. For infants the treatment is often done in a parent’s arms. Most importantly, in all pediatric appointments, the child drives the treatment, so it always looks different depending on the child and the day. What ages do you treat? Infants through 18 years. After that, 18+ can book a regular adult appointment. Does my child have to be able to sit still for the treatment? Absolutely not! Children can move and squirm and play during treatment. At times, children may find themselves getting into a relaxed state as well. As the child grows and becomes more comfortable lying still, the treatments will naturally shift to meet this ability.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Winter is not coming, friends. Winter is here! - By Nicole Acosta Nemergut</image:title>
<image:caption>The traditional Chinese calendar is organized by 24 solar terms. These are two-week periods to both mark time and the seasonal changes that happen throughout the year. Some of these names are direct and self-explanatory like Major Heat (July 23) and Beginning of Spring (February 4). Others might seem more romantic and describe phenomena we’ve lost touch with such as Awakening of Insects (March 6) and Cold Dew (October 8). We’re currently, at the beginning of November in the Start of Winter (November 8). The leaves have turned. The frost has settled, and it is dark. All land-based cultures have ways to notice, mark, celebrate or tolerate the cold months and short days. For us in New York we mark the change of seasons from fall to winter with the sweet sounds of Mariah Carey ringing through all public places. For others it may be putting away the summer clothes and taking out sweaters or resting gardening beds and planting bulbs for next year. Within Chinese Medicine winter is the season of water and of the Kidneys, our deepest organs. It’s a time to retreat inward. To be home. To preserve warmth. To enjoy all that we grew in the spring, harvested in the summer, and preserved in the fall. It’s a time for mending, rest, and repair.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’ve been recommending thyme to almost everyone this month. Many of us have made it through the back to school, start of fall colds and coughs but have lingering phlegm and mucus. Thyme is a powerhouse for our respiratory system, tastes good and is easily accessible. We can find it fresh or dried at any grocery store, in farmers markets or even grow it easily ourselves. Thyme has an affinity for the Lungs. It is an expectorant, antibacterial, and antiviral. We can use food grade herbs like thyme with a heavy hand, adding fistfuls to broths or stews. We can throw some in whenever we roast something. We can even drink it as tea.</image:caption>

<image:caption>What is an herb consult? An herb consult is a chance to talk in depth with an herbalist about your current health and your health goals. This could be for short term or acute issues like a cold or stomach bug, or it could be for longer term issues like improving digestion or painful menstrual cycles. You can even schedule an herb consult for preventive issues like getting ahead of seasonal allergies, preparing for cold and flu season, or if you know you will be dealing with a high stress event.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Let’s talk about steaming… again! - By Alexandra Garcia + Kenna Bouvet</image:title>
<image:caption>A lot has happened since we last wrote a post about steaming. We don’t call it v-steam anymore, we now call it pelvic steam, because vaginas aren’t the only part of the body that steaming can benefit from! The digestive system, urethra, pelvic floor muscles and breasts (while breastfeeding) can be impacted by this treatment. Ten years ago it wasn’t as easy to find information about it, today with a quick google search, you’ll find wonderful information about the practice, as well as some controversial opinions about it. You might even run into celebrities raving about how it helped them postpartum and how it's now part of their self care routine. No doubt, pelvic steam is going mainstream, but there is great validity to why pelvic steaming should be a part of your self care routine.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Let’s talk about steaming… again! - Can I steam at home?</image:title>
<image:caption>Absolutely! Using water alone can help with promoting circulation. But if you’re looking to use herbs we recommend that you see a steam therapist for better assessment of what your needs are. Herbs are used, according to your cycle and bleed, and how many weeks you are postpartum. Common herbs that are used for steaming are: Calendula Chamomile Lavender Oregano</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Let’s talk about steaming… again!</image:title>
<image:caption>When should I steam? I think the correct question is when NOT to steam: If you’re pregnant (or think you’ve conceived) While bleeding (on your period) If you have a fever If you’re miscarrying If you have an open wound Consult a steam therapist if: • You have an IUD • You have spontaneous bleeding</image:caption>

<image:caption>As we begin 2021, a year in which the healing arts will be much needed,I am happy to announce that Earth + Sky will also be embarking on a new beginning. I’m so thrilled to share that two of our team, Cynthia McCright and Kenna Bouvet, are taking over as the owners and directors of Earth + Sky. After more than a year of careful planning (this decision predated the pandemic) and a successful reopening after COVID closures, Cynthia and Kenna have shown grace and determination as they have gently stepped forward into their new roles.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I feel an immense sense of gratitude for the ease and beauty of this transition. I know that Kenna and Cynthia will carry forward the vision and spirit of Earth + Sky, and more importantly will continue to grow and evolve the business into something even better. Beyond their mastery of skills, these women bring incredible heart and passion for their work. On the eve of the winter solstice, we gathered to honor the transition with a ceremony (crafted for us by one of our massage therapists, Anna). My heart was full seeing Cynthia and Kenna, lighting a candle to signify new beginnings as they stepped up as owners of Earth + Sky. It takes so much courage, determination, and love to carry forward a small business. It takes so much more than that to do so during a global pandemic, but these two do so with a passion for the healing arts and a decade of experience between the two of them. <image:title>Journal - Labor Prep & Labor Stimulation Acupuncture - What’s the difference? - Expectant mothers may have heard that acupuncture can be used to prepare for labor or even to stimulate contractions to come on. If you are approaching the end of your third trimester and want to know more about what acupuncture can offer, here are some key points.</image:title>
<image:caption>At Earth + Sky, we offer 2 distinct types of acupuncture sessions for those nearing the end of their pregnancy: labor prep and labor stimulation. While they might seem pretty interchangeable, they are actually quite different in their intention.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Ways to Stay Well this Winter with the Wisdom of Chinese Medicine</image:title>
<image:caption>1) Hats and Scarves Galore! Practitioners of Chinese Medicine believe that in order to prevent injury to the body from wind and cold, you need to protect the most vulnerable areas of the body with warm clothes. These are the back of the neck, upper back, and shoulder areas which correspond to the Tai Yang Channels. The elements will always try to enter here first, causing symptoms of Wind-Cold: fever, chills, body aches, and stuffy or runny nose. The theories surrounding this date back to the late Han Dynasty- that is 1800 years ago! 2) Stay Dry! Protecting the upper back and shoulder areas becomes especially true if you have wet hair or have just sweated a lot. When coming out into the cold from the gym, always wear a scarf or hood to protect the back of the neck. Kids coming from swimming lessons in the winter should always have their hair dried before going outside. It is the wisdom of many cultures that being in the cold when you are wet can make you get sick. This cannot be discredited by germ theory. From a western perspective, having to shiver to warm up a freezing body can detract from the immune system allowing germs to take a stronger hold. 3) Eat Soup! Miso soup with scallion is great to eat at the very first stages of a cold. The miso with the scallion work together to promote a slight sweat to push out the cold. No medicine needed! If you find that you have been battling a cold for a long time, try making chicken soup the old fashioned way. Boil the bones of a chicken, including the neck, to make a broth. The bones release the nutrients of their marrow into the broth which will nourish your body’s immune cells. 4) Consult with a Chinese Herbalist Chinese medicine has an intricate and highly developed system–again, going back 1800+ years–of treating the common cold in all its variations. When exposed to the same ‘bug’, why does one person get a sore throat and the other a cough? Also, children will tend to spike fevers much higher than adults because they by their nature have more firey constitutions. These differences have to do with the differing terrain of each individual body. So, the same herbal formula would definitely NOT be appropriate to all cases of the same cold. It is best to consult a Chinese herbalist to find the right formula for you. To work most effectively, herbal medicine should focus not on eliminating the bug, but instead on reviving the disturbed function of the body. Then the body will eliminate the bug all by itself! And you will avoid costly side-effects and contributing to antibiotic resistance. That’s it folks, we’re wishing you a healthy winter and a happy holiday season!</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Summer Tick Kit - There are many on the market that contain deet, but some people may not want to cover their kids in that everyday. Hannah Springer of the Oliver Weston Company introduced me to Bye-Bye Bugs Organic insect repellent. It even helps keep the insane Shady park mosquitoes away. As with most natural bug repellents I spray both the kids and they clothes and re-apply a few times a day. We now carry this in our office too $15 for a 2oz spray.</image:title>

<image:title>Journal - Incorporating Massage with your Kids - Infants 2 Months-Pre Crawling Great for babies who display quiet alert time but are still not mobile. Ask your baby permission to give them a massage by using a sign (like showing them your hands) or sound (like swishing some oil between your palms). Look for happy smiles, or grabbing of your hands to indicate a “yes,” and rolling away or crying to indicate a “no.” (if you get a “no” try tending to other needs first and then trying again). This teaches them consent and encourages communication. Infant massage can be very simple. Start with little circles on the bottoms of the feet and around the ankles. Make a clockwise circle on the tummy to help with gas pain. As they get used to it explore massaging arms and legs with “C” shaped hands. Using pressure is fine, touch that’s too light will tickle. Massaging down the limbs can promote a calm mood, massaging towards the heart can stimulate a sleepy baby. Start with a few minutes a day and build up to a daily routine.</image:title>

<image:title>Journal - Incorporating Massage with your Kids - Crawlers and Toddlers Mobile little ones are unlikely to spend much time in one place, try incorporating some massage into diaper routine, after bath time, or with a song or game. For example, you can play the game “Guess what I’m drawing on your back?” No oil needed, just pretend draw on their back and then spend a little time “clearing the slate” massaging in a circle. The game will keep them entertained and the touch can be very grounding for all those big feelings.</image:title>

<image:title>Journal - Incorporating Massage with your Kids - Little Kids Massage can be a great way to teach anatomy: “Where is your arm? Good!” Then a few massage strokes on that arm. “Where’s your head? Good!” Continue this game as long as it holds your child’s attention. If your child is in the “I can do it by myself” phase, try taking turns- “Where’s my foot?”, your child can massage your foot, then you can say, “Ok now it’s my turn. Where is YOUR foot?” And you can gently massage your child’s foot. Let your child challenge you, too, and ask you to find a body part from time to time. Make a rhythmic or musical game of your massage: try tapping different rhythms on your child, vocalizing the rhythms as you tap. Have your child repeat after you and sing along. Change the rhythms as you work on different parts of the body. Rainstorm massage: use different types of massage techniques to create a gentle rainstorm on your child’s back. Fingers pitter patter slowly, then faster, loose gentle fists for big raindrops, wide palms rubbing slowly side to side can be the wind blowing back and forth, make a lightning crashing sound as you spread palms apart from the spine out to the sides of the body as if smoothing out fabric. Get creative. Vocal sound effects are very helpful.</image:title>

<image:title>Journal - Incorporating Massage with your Kids - School Age Kids Massage and bodywork techniques are a great way to help kids calm down and be ready to focus on school work or go to bed. Living in a busy city there is much sensory stimulation constantly. Some kids who tend to get over-stimulated can benefit from pressure with the hands over the eyes. Have the child lie down and place your hands over the orbital bones of the eyes–not the eyes directly- and place moderate pressure for about 30 seconds or until the child says they are done. Joint compression works really well with children who are hyperactive. Have the child lie down in a comfortable position and apply brief but firm pressure to each of the major joints. Start with ankles, wrists, then move to knees and elbows, and lastly shoulders and hips. You will want to hold the bones above each joint with one hand, while exerting pressure from the bone below. For example, for the knee, stabilize the leg with one hand on the thigh, and exert an upward pressure with the other hand from the lower leg. For the hips, it is best to have the child lying on their side and exert a firm downward pressure with two hands on the bony part of the hip. Let the child give themselves a massage. Guide your child on a massage of their body as you demonstrate on yourself. “First let’s gently squeeze our hands (pinching the meaty part at the base of your thumb). Now let’s squeeze our arms (squeezing big your way from wrist to elbow to shoulder). Let’s give ourselves big hugs (hug yourself).” Continue on face (circles on temples, rub circles or tap fingers on forehead and skull) and legs and feet.)</image:title>

<image:title>Journal - Incorporating Massage with your Kids - Preteens and Teens If your teen is not the touchy feely sort, maybe starting with hands or feet is a good way to ease into the idea of massage. A massage to hands or feet can have a calming relaxing effect throughout the whole body without having to massage the entire body. If your teen plays sports, massage can be an important part of their self care and relaxation routine. If they are comfortable with you working on them, try to determine which muscles get the most wear and tear in the sport your child plays and focus your efforts there. If they prefer to work on themselves, you can demonstrate on yourself how to rub out achy muscles focusing on the muscles that need the most care. Stretching, rolling on a foam roller and epsom salt baths can also be great self care techniques for teens. Treat your young adult to a 30 minute massage at Earth + Sky to introduce them to the world of therapeutic massage. Other modalities they might like are cupping and cranial sacral therapy. Get one for yourself at the same time, you can model good self-care while you make a special day of it. A word about using oil- babies and kids have very receptive skin- so use an oil that you would feel comfortable eating! That means anything out of your kitchen is fine (coconut, grapeseed and olive oil work well) or a pure product like baby jojoba oil or shea butter works well too. Wait until your child is at least a year to add essential oils, and use them wisely and sparingly.</image:title>

<image:title>Journal - Massage for Breast Health- Here’s the scoop - So when I was invited to attend a breast massage workshop hosted by Midwife, Massage Therapist, and Women’s Health Extraordinaire, Susanrachel Condon with the Earth + Sky team, I was delighted, if not also a little bemused. I thought, “That’s all good and well, I’m down for massage any day of the week, but how can we spend 6+ hours talking about rubbing boobs?” I was very quickly proven wrong. Breast massage includes work on the upper back, shoulders, and upper arm areas. All of course which are connected to the breast tissue in one way or another. The practitioner gave me a few options – she could massage on the skin like a regular massage, through a towel, or she could instruct and guide me to massage myself depending on my comfort level. (I opted for the full monty!)</image:title>

<image:title>Journal - Massage for Breast Health- Here’s the scoop - While on a cellular level, their composition is constantly evolving, so is their palpable quality. A woman may notice at one point in her cycle or season of life, they feel more or less lumpy. More or less sensitive. Or even painful. (Also known as Cyclic Mastalgia, which massage can help relieve.) They change in size. There are few nerve endings in breast tissue, but they respond very directly to estrogen and progesterone. So pain in the breasts, when not stemming from an infection or cyst, is usually referred from somewhere else in the body. It’s crucial that a woman knows her normal – even if that varies in a monthly menarche. Breast massage serves as a great starting point to familiarizing ourself with our breasts and starting the journey of healing our past with all the criticism that comes with growing up female.</image:title>

In fact, working with children is what brought her to acupuncture in the first place, after realizing first hand the benefits of this treatment in her own health journey growing up. She brings versatile modalities that are tailored to the age of her younger clients, from newborns to teenagers, and she connects with the entire family by offering lifestyle and diet discussions that work in tandem with her treatments. Kenna’s extensive post-graduate training puts you in extremely capable hands – she has advanced pediatric certificates in the United States and Europe, she is a part of the Maternal Acupuncture Mentorship Program (MAMPS), and she has training in Craniosacral Therapy. She also has worked as an Integrative Research Clinician at Columbia Medical in the Pediatric Division. <image:caption>Massage Therapist Chelsea views their massage therapy practice as being connected to their dance work, in that it’s a continuation of their study of the body. But they go even deeper: “Our bodies have an inherent emotional and energetic tone that is integrated in our tissue.” Chelsea enjoys creating a space where their clients feel supported – she listens closely to not only your words but also your breath. They are curious about the body’s holding patterns, and strives to meet the client’s goals while treating the fascia, mind, and spirit. In doing so, she is able to develop relationships that make her aware of areas in a client’s body that they didn’t even realize needed some attention. Chelsea has prenatal and labor/postpartum certifications under the mentorship of Kiera Nagle. She is an American Massage Therapy Association member, and she also enjoys working with the womb and the uterus generally. They are always happy to provide a safe space for more queer and trans bodies in their LGBTQ+ community, who are seeking a supportive space and a session that respects their boundaries. <image:title>Craniosacral - Craniosacral Therapy for Infants (0-12 months)</image:title>
<image:caption>Craniosacral Therapy is a very gentle approach that helps to address restrictions and strains arising in utero, during birth, or thereafter, and can be very helpful to infants in moving forward with their feeding, digestion, developmental movement, self-regulation, and general well-being. The work consists of light, still holds and some gentle passive movement. During the session babies lie on the table, nurse, sleep, or move around as they need. If you and your infant are experiencing feeding or milk supply issues, we highly encourage you to see a lactation consultant prior to, or in tandem with, receiving Craniosacral Therapy. We collaborate closely with lactation consultants and find this to be exceedingly beneficial for the baby. We are happy to suggest referrals. *This service is currently call to book - please reach out to the office: 917-725-0207 60min Session $150</image:caption>

<image:title>Pediatric Acupuncture and Bodywork - Craniosacral Therapy for Infants (0-12 months)</image:title>

The cup creates a suction, or vacuum, lifting the skin in order to promote better circulation, improved blood flow leading to less inflammation, and alleviation of pain and cramping. This is a great standalone, immune-boosting treatment for when the seasons change, or for unrelenting back pain. This treatment can also be integrated into your massage or acupuncture service. 30min (cupping, only) $100 Cupping Add-On (to massage or acupuncture treatments) +$55 *please contact the office to schedule cupping add-ons</image:caption>
